It's been 400 years in the making... We are proud to premiere a thrilling new translation and adaptation of this epic Spanish play from 1636. With timeless themes, potent emotions, and subversive humor, Life Is a Dream reverberates across the centuries. Our lively new version mixes daring drama with ’50s doo-wop for an exhilarating night of entertainment.
Pedro Calderón de la Barca is Spain’s equivalent of Shakespeare. His masterpiece is a play from the Spanish Golden Age called La vida es sueño, which tells the tale of a royal child banished to a cave because of bad omens — until suddenly ascending to the throne. Is it all just a dream? Should we blame our genes or our upbringing for our flaws? Does absolute power corrupt? Or can we transcend the curse of being born under a bad sign?
This show has been a labor of love for Artistic Director Janine Ann Kehlenbach, and the realization of her own dream. For years, Janine has wanted to tell this touching tale to local theatre lovers. We're delighted to bring it to life with such a talented team.
